Japanese variety TV shows love pranks, don’t they? This little shit, Emperor Shijo, entombed in Fushimi, should be their patron saint.

He was not yet two when he was enthroned as the 87th emperor at the Imperial Palace in Kyoto in 1232. His favorite pastime was sprinkling talcum powder in a random hallway, hiding, and gleefully watching his retainers slip and fall.

However, he didn’t even live 10 years until one day no one slipped on his powder, he went to test it, and slammed the back of his head on the wooden floor. He died three days later.

He was the first of many Emperors entombed at the Tsukiwa no Misasagi Imperial graveyard at a temple on the north slopes of Mt. Inari.
