Dilemma: LeWagon or 3-Year Master’s Degree

As someone who has visited Japan frequently over the years, I’ve developed a desire to eventually settle there, preferably in or around Hyogo. Currently based in Taiwan and saving money, I’m considering two main options for furthering my career: pursuing a 3-year master’s degree in user experience or enrolling in a program at Le Wagon Tokyo for web development. Neither plan will commence until the summer of 2025. Here are the pros and cons of each option:

3-year degree:

Pros

• Comprehensive knowledge and networking opportunities, especially beneficial for securing employment with American companies in Japan.
• Potential to secure well-paying jobs in the US if needed in the future (e.g., for family obligations).
• Greater job opportunities.

Cons

• Three years away from Asia, which I love.
• High tuition and living expenses.
• Requires working for a few years before being eligible to apply for jobs in Japan.
• Limited time for focusing on Japanese language proficiency.

Le Wagon:

Pros

• Lower costs.
• Shorter duration.
• Opportunity to focus more on learning Japanese while already in Japan.

Cons

• Uncertainty regarding job prospects post-program.
• Potential inadequacy if returning to the US is necessary (not sure if only LeWagon and experience in Japan will help).
