Woke up to one particularly big hole, and a few smaller ones, in the backyard. Looks very different to a hole dug by a dog, for example – more like it was dug in and up from underneath. Any idea what could have done it? Living in Shugakuin, so I guess something could have come down from the mountain, but no idea what!

It could be a wild boar. They love digging holes like this. Did you find any footprints?

Definitely a boar. We have a big problem with them in my area. I caught the one tearing up my garden on a trail camera. Now I’m having to build fences all the way round, which is something I didn’t want to do.
Boars do an awful lot more damage than that, so I guess that one got spooked soon after starting.
My guess would be a badger (穴熊). They don’t usually cause trouble for people, so probably there are at least a few in your neighborhood. They like to waddle along the small streams and drainage channels in the evening, so you almost never see them unless you’re really looking.
In my place it’s either the fox or the raccoon. They both like to dig and mess up with our vegetables 🥴
