Moving to Japan for work in mid-August.
Been looking for mobile carriers and found Ahamo and Rakuten to be my best options. here's what i learned so far:
Ahamo:
- its under docomo, so reception would never be an issue
- 20gb/mo plan for 2,970 JPY, practically unlimited as it gets throttled after 20gb
- unlimited plan available for 4,970 JPY
- everything is done fully online, no EN support
Rakuten Mobile
- 3,278 JPY for unlimited data!
- for calls and texts, it must be done thru the rakuten link app, idk how much of an inconvenience this is but please chime in if you have experience
- receptions can get… spotty? I'll share details about my living situations later to see if this will be an issue for me or not.
- in-store setup/support, there is english staff in some stores
My living situation:
- Living in tokyo, within 23 wards
- work in roppongi
- still learning japanese
- honestly only us 15-25gb a month, can live by without streaming videos on trains and dont play mobile games at all. streaming music is a must tho
what do you guys think? I'm leaning towards Ahamo because calling/texting with app sounds weird and my data needs seems sufficient with their plan. only concerned with fully online and no EN support
