Hiking trails around Kyoto

We’re looking to get off the beaten path and take on some nice hiking paths into the mountains that surround Kyoto this weekend, any hidden gems out there or recommended routes?

  1. You can go up the mountain behind Ninna-ji for a miniature version of the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage, if that sounds interesting.

  2. There are six official hiking routes with beautiful trails in Kyoto. You can found more info looking for 京都一周トレイル (Kyōto Isshū Toreiru). I’ve done bits of the Fushimi, Higashiyama and Kitayama routes. And can’t wait to do Nishiyama next! Enjoy!!!!

  3. Is there a high chance of an encounter with a bear. I walk quite frequently in the area, but the warnings for bears does leave some concern. Especially when going alone. Did Mt. Atago, Mt. Hiei, and less known routes.
