Retaining dual citizenship at 29 w/o previous Japanese passport

Basically what the title says. I’m half Japanese. I was born with dual citizenship and am registered in my mother’s koseki family registry. I never obtained a Japanese passport before 18, and always traveled with my U.S. passport to Japan. Last time I visited, I was 17 y.o.

I’m now 29 years old and may be moving to Japan for an indefinite amount of time and will either need to apply for a visa or preferably retain my citizenship to live and work in Japan.

I am going to Japan to visit for about 6 weeks starting late October until December. If I end up moving, it will be sometime around February 2025. I speak limited Japanese. Enough to get around, but definitely not fluid/conversational or business level. I could not walk into a passport office in Japan and get away with acting like I’m a citizen who has lived in Japan for several years.

How do I get a Japanese passport?
