How do you make flashcards?

With other languages I would usually just have TL word on front, NL word on back, and have Anki show both as separate notes or cards or whatever it is. With Japanese though, you have kanji, reading, and English, giving 3! = 6 possible front/back pairs.

That is, you could have:

  • English -> kanji
  • English -> reading
  • Reading -> English
  • Reading -> kanji
  • Kanji -> English
  • Kanji -> reading

Other than reading -> kanji, I can see arguments for all of these (need to write, need to speak, need to listen, n/a, need to read, need to read). Maybe you can lump two into kanji -> English+reading, but I don't see how you can avoid having four cards per word without skipping something.

So, what do you all do?

Also, in Anki (or should I post there?), does anyone know how to make it such that you have a different rate of new cards per day depending on direction? Because it's much easier for me to learn English <-> reading than kanji -> reading+English than English -> kanji.
