As good as Sunday was, today was saved by the Main Event: Newman and O-Khan had a pretty good match but that was followed by a slightly underwhelming Jake Lee-Gabe Kidd bout that was very good action wise but didn’t have the best of finishes with Jake ainning by count-out and by an imo way too slow match between Naito and Shooter (not including EVIL and ZSJ for obvious reasons).
Overall it would’ve been by far my least favorite night of the tournament if not for how good Shingo and SANADA were. And even with it it’s definitely in contention, which is not saying much considering the tournament’s been great overall.
PS: Great to see Chris Charlton back, though.
Damn good night, imo.
Gabe vs Jake was everything I wanted it to be as Gabe brought the fight out of Jake and the crowd was eating it up, loudly cheering for both guys. I know some people don’t care for finishes outside of a pin or sub, but I feel the count-out worked for this match; Gabe got cocky and basically got punched out by the bigger Lee.
Always fun to see ZSJ punk EVIL.
For two guys who came into the tourney banged up, Natio/Umino was pretty good. Some real stink on some of the moves they put on each other.
SANADA/Shingo was good shit. Leave it to Takagi to get the best out of SANADA in a good while. Love the shout-outs to two of their mentors, Tenryu for Takagi and Mutoh for SANADA, and the matches those legends had against each other.
Takeshita and Shingo deserve better…
I’m feeling more confident that my SANADA prediction to win the tournament is the correct call.
Great O Khan eliminates Callum – obvious and right choice, solid match. I hope GOK gets some more points on the board.
Lee – Kidd – fun match for sure, wrong winner imo, but to eliminate Jake Lee that fast after beating Sanada that dominant would be to early.
ZSJ – Evil – really funny moment, great to see Evil get outsmarted
Naito – Shota – I’m sorry but Naito is to injured. He couldn’t land the Destino again..
Sanada – Shingo – I don’t know why they do Shingo so dirty. He’s over, he’s a one of the best (probably the best) in ring worker of the company. Would like to see him get a world title again.
I think that was the first step splitting Jake Lee from wardogs. Kidd won’t accept this, I’m excited for post match comments
There’s probably still a path for Umino but it’s a very long shot.
How do you guys feel about SANADA now being that type of wrestler who would kick out of huge moves at 1? Are you convinced or no?
The night was perfect without the Naito/Umino finish.
The match was great, but the roll up finish was a really weird choice. It fit perfectly with Gabe which is a young and savage wrestler that Naito out smart. But Shota sell it like he was hit by a Destino and it’s make me feel like Naito steal another victory, which is bad for the champion.
2 shows left, and my worst nightmare for the booking of A block is happening. Excepting Zack (because he is not a former champion), having SANADA, Naito and EVIL on top of the block where it’s needed to have young wrestlers as Umino and Gabe getting booking to carry on the company. I hope Gedo will make it right
Just thinking out loud;
If Sanada is the likely winner, why punk him out to Jake Lee in his first match? The match was under 5 minutes, if memory serves and Lee has been below replacement since.
I just can’t imagine we’re setting up a Tokyo Dome Main event with a guy who lost to Jake Lee. but perhaps my Gaijin is showing…
As great as that main event was, I’m not terribly moved at the idea of SANADA winning the tournament when this was being billed as the “G1 of a ‘new era'” to then go back to the old guard.
Not that SANADA is “old”, he’s still in his prime but he’s been established
Far more convinced for Jake Lee’s fit in War Dogs after this match. Thought it was great showing from him and gabe did well to elevate his new character
Even though it was kinda predictable that the first elimination would be either Oleg or Newman, I’m still waving the flag for Newman. Dude has done way better than most would in his position, basically being painted as “AliExpress Will Ospreay” by a lot of people. Oleg is doubtlessly going to be eliminated soon, and regardless of that I’m still thrilled to see where they both may go from here. Those qualifying tournaments were a fucking fantastic idea.
Also, wow, has there ever been a more obvious example of Gedo’s modern booking being to 50/50 everyone than this? I know it may sound like a total bitchy complaint, but I feel like G1s used to be less predictable, there used to be more early eliminations and the like. What is with this “we have to hold everyone within the same range so EVERYONE still has a chance during the last nights” stuff?
Anyway – Phantasmo making it through on a three-match sweep making it 5-4, anyone?
Sanada is eliminating Zack for sure right?
Zack probably also Losses to Gabe to keep Gabe in it for the last block night.
Atleast he probably has a titleshot down the line
Call me the dumb gaijin, but I totally could’ve watched ten more minutes between Shingo and Sanada. The way this played out, this is one match where a time limit draw would’ve been great
Jake Lee racking up wins now 🥹
Sanada and Shingo was a masterclass in storytelling. Sanada playing the never gonna quit babyface. Shingo as the cocky big brother. Crowd was on fire. Excellent story and excellent match.
I don’t want this G1 to end.
Arrrgh Shingo losing again. Sigh. I know he’s had success in NJPW, but he really doesn’t seem like a guy Gedo sees as more than a good match machine. He should be in the level of sanada and Naito, not a high end jtts
Sanada and Shingo was an excellent match, but by no means am I clamoring for Sanada to with the G1. He was the longest WHC, but I’m still rooting for fresh faces in the main event scene.
Best SANADA match of the tournament and the best EVIL match of the tournament on the same night.
Clearly a sign that they should reform their tag team.
Loved that Naito pin! Looked sloppy af but that’s kinda what made it so cool
