JSPS chances for biology

Hi all,

I am a marine scientist nearing the end of my PhD. I have applied recently for the international student intake of the JSPS scholarship program for a postdoc. I wonder if people who know something about the JSPS could suggest what they think my chances are, as I’m pretty excited / anxious about it.

I’ve got seven first author publications with three more in review, have good contact with the host institution in Japan, the project seeks to fill crucial knowledge gaps which the host institution has identified and which speak to my skills and experience, and I am learning Japanese as fast as I can

Can past JSPS recipients or Japanese academics tell me whether this sounds like a competitive application? I understand the JSPS acceptance rate for biology to be around 40% but this seems WAY optimistic. My thesis will be submitted in January, and I have a letter from my home institution stating that I’m on track.

In any case, I have plenty else to do in my home country and am applying for other post docs. But man, I would really love to go!

Thanking you in advance
