Bells ringing at tokashiku beach?

My partner and I were in Okinawa in early September. We took a trip to Tokashiki Island and scootered to Tokashiku beach.

It was my first time swimming in an ocean, frankly I was petrified but swallowed my fear because I figured I would regret it later if I didn’t go in. So we went snorkelling and eventually my partner/the water started taking us much further from shore than I was comfortable with so I started swimming back alone – even more petrified because about five minutes into me hauling ass back to shore (with a sprained ankle) they started ringing a bell somewhere close to the beach.

Of course in that moment I’m like okay there’s sharks and started swimming faster in a panic, eventually getting back to shore I look back at the water and see a bunch of people still out there. So reasonably I would assume this is not a shark warning but I’m wondering if anyone could tell me what it was because it’s been 3 months and it keeps me up at night.

p.s. I did really enjoy seeing all the cool fish and coral reefs, I also saw a huge moray, however, I will never swim in an ocean ever again. This experience taught me that my (maybe unrealistic) fear of sharks is much stronger than my desire to see cool fish.
