Doubts about MEXT Scholarship and Research Students

Hello everyone.

Since the start of the year I've been planing to apply to the MEXT Scholarship next year, but recently I've gotten pretty anxious about the Math test I'm supposed to take and the concept of Research Students.

In the embassy page for my country, it only says that the test will be focused in what I want to study, but the page from my country specifies that a Math is obligatory alongside the Japanese and English one. I'm horrible at math beyond basic knowledge.

So in my anxiety I stumbled upon the concept of Research Students in the old exams (from 2019) results page and I'm even more confused because of the lack of Math related test for it.

I'm planning on studying Political Science or other Humanities-related careers in Japan, so I'm anxious at the possibility of Math being my biggest issue for it, I know that the English test (English isn't my native language but I've been exposed to it through my whole life) will help me and I'm kind of hopeful that I can at least have a basic understanding of Japanese in the next months.

It should be noted that I'm not from the US so that may explain why there wasn't any explanations to what the Reseach Students are and thus I have zero idea to what they are.
