I'm great at reading Hiragana, but I struggle really hard with reading Katakana. I know all the individual characters, but when it comes to reading them and trying to decipher what English word it's trying to be is super hard for me for some reason. For example, I was listening to a Japanese song and the title is in Katakana, so I tried to read it for practice, but even though I could technically read all the kana, I was saying it out loud over and over again and for the life of me could not figure out what English word it was supposed to be!
If you want to laugh at me like I did lolol the song title was マリーゴールド, and in English it's Marigold. But it literally took me a solid 7 or 8 times of repeating it out loud to myself to understand that the title is Marigold. Is this common with katakana for people learning Japanese? How should I practice to ensure I get better at this?
