Working on a US military base as a US citizen.

Hello everyone, I wanted to try and spend a year or two in Japan just doing a laborer/bartender job on a US Military base. I've been browsing USAjobs and I've noticed that most of them require "SOFA status." So I googled around and it seems like it's something you get after working for the government (Or being in the military/military family). So my question is, is there a chance for me to get SOFA status after i've been hired or do I need to find a government job beforehand? Is this plan even possible for someone like me with no military background?

I've seen similar posts about this but they're usually pretty specific and not exactly relevant to what i'm trying to do. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
