What city near Tokyo is great for an English Teacher?

I’m an English Teacher (34m) from America looking to relocate to Japan and I’ve heard good things about Tokyo for work however, I am more of a suburbs person. I like access to the city but prefer to be in a smaller town with less overwhelm. I’m also considering things like affordable housing, cleanliness and natural landscapes. According to my research, Saitama and Chiba seem to be good places. Wanted to know if you have any other recommendations?

  1. I mean… if you want to be near Tokyo but not in a large city, those are basically your options. Also, both Saitama and Chiba are HUGE and there are both large and small cities located within each.

  2. The way you are wording the question makes it look like you can choose where you will be working so I assume you are looking for an actual teacher position and not an ALT or eikawa..

If you want to work in Tokyo and still have a “quieter” lifestyle look for places 40~ min away from Yamanote stations like Adachi or Suginami

  3. If you plan on teaching English in Japan for a program you don’t get to choose where you live. It’s an assignment.

  4. Yeah, Saitama and Chiba are decent locations for what you say your preferences are. There are also suburbs (Fuchu, etc) west of Tokyo that can be nice for living and working while still having train access into the city. However, most major companies and recruiting that work with overseas applicants tend to assign you somewhere, and it might not be where you prefer to be located.
