I’m currently in the process of applying to the JET Program and have hit a bit of a roadblock when it comes to obtaining a referral letter. Most of my experience comes from private tutoring sessions rather than working at a school or formal institution. I’ve tutored some students while I was in college for extra income and have built good rapport with both them and their parents.
My question is: would it be acceptable for me to ask a former student (or their parents) to write a referral letter for me? I’m unsure if this would meet JET's requirements for professional references or if it might look less credible since it’s from a private tutoring context.
If anyone has faced a similar situation or has any insight into how flexible JET is with this, I’d really appreciate your advice.
Thanks so much in advance. 😊
