Boring?

I’m thinking about doing a summer program through my college at Kyoto Seika University, it’s a great opportunity and very affordable but i’m worried that there will be nothing to do other than visit temples and gardens?

My college is already small and quiet and I was hoping for something more exciting. Obviously it’s not Tokyo, but are there more exciting things to do than visit historic places? If so, what should I check out? I like to go shopping during the day and try bars or clubs or parties at night.

I’d consider traveling to nearby cities that may have more things to do, or take weekend trips to Tokyo, but train tickets would add up and since it’s a 5 week program, a JR pass would still be very expensive.

Thoughts?
