I recently watched a video where a YouTuber was saying that the fastest way to become fluent in speaking Japanese is by focusing on vocabulary—specifically, learning the 4000 most commonly used words.
He mentioned that without a solid vocab base, grammar and speaking practice can only take you so far.
He also recommended using tools like Anki for spaced repetition or even AI tools like ChatGPT to help you generate the vocab words, and also help you practise basic grammar.
I’ve started his method last week, and at my current pace, it would take me at least a year to learn all 4000 words. I’m curious to see how far this will take me, and I’d love to share an update on my progress next year.
What do you think? Is vocabulary really the most important thing for speaking fluently, or are there other methods that worked better for you?
