I’m currently pursuing a 3-year bachelor’s degree in my country, but due to personal reasons, I had to take a break after completing 2 years. I plan to return and finish my final year after this gap.
My goal is to work in the tech industry, but I’m worried about how this gap might impact my chances of getting a tech job, especially if I plan to eventually work in Japan. Will this make it significantly harder for me to find a job?
I’ve done some research and found that gaps aren’t always a dealbreaker if you have the right skills and experience. But I’d love to hear from people who’ve been in similar situations or who work in tech. Is it realistic to aim for a tech job in Japan, given my situation?

Unless you’re going out and telling your employer that you took a year off how will they even know?
It’s not like they print “took a year off” on the diploma they hand your at graduation.
I don’t think it will make a difference other than if you’re trying to use the newly graduated aspect, but I think that’s only viable if you graduated from a Japanese university anyway.
I took 5 years to complete my 2yr associates degree and was still able to get a tech job over here, so you are good. Note, I did have a little over 9 years of experience in the field. Just come up with a good reason. I got my job through a recruiter and the recruiter asked me about it, but none of the actual employers did. As a foreigner, they mostly care about your Japanese ability and if you can do the job. At the time of my interviews, I didn’t have the JLPT either, but I was more than able to show them my ability in the actual interview.
