You have to climb a lot of stairs – A LOT – to get this view looking down on Kiyomizu-dera and Heian-kyo. I was chugging along well, I thought, but of course an older man went blasting past me.

He was taking the stone steps THREE AT A TIME and literally running up the steps like a monkey. When I got to the top of the fifth landing he was waiting for me and laughing, with his "jiman" video cued up, a TV news clip of him winning the elderly category race up the grand staircase at Kyoto Station held in February. He's 70.

  1. I forgot to mention that is Hideyoshi’s tomb at the top, Hokokubyo. It’s a shrine with ¥100 entrance fee.

  2. I’m real mad at myself for never knowing about this when I lived near Kyoto but am hoping to make it over there during my next visit back!
