靴下 thread – post words that clicked for you easily

The idea of the thread is simple: When I learned kutusita, it was intuitive and easy to remember because it made sense as "under shoe."

There are undoubtedly many such words in Japanese that can be understood quickly, so why not try to learn them?

Any level is OK! Just post new words that clicked for you, and importantly, WHY.

  1. 居場所 – wearabouts (very obvious, just 居(る) + 場所)

気絶 きぜつ fainting, passing out. Your ki is exterminated.

能無し のうなし incompetent person, fool. 能 is ability but also sounds like 脳, and furthermore thinking of English ノー + 無し sounds like double negative emphasis to say they have nothing (in terms of ability).

  2. there are words like 手首 and 足首 they follow the same pattern pretty easy to remember

  3. 下町 したまち was pretty straight forward

I mean, we all know the 下町の男の子 したまちのおとこのこ , right? 🙈

  4. i like the reading of 蘇るbecause it could be like 黄泉帰る like being reanimated is coming back from the underworld

  5. For some reason 落ちる – おちる – to fall, just clicked for me. It just looks like a scene of a slippery lake in winter, where you fall on your mouth.
