If する conjugates into される、させる、and できる(I hope I’m not missing any others), can these also be conjugated further?

I see things like できなかった as conjugations for できる, so it becomes "could not do" from "can do"… can the other forms of する be translated like this, and does it work this way for other verbs, too?

  1. Yes, of course.

Generally speaking, most Japanese ‘conjugations’ are just the appending of a helper-verb, sometimes with a vowel change. The resulting conjugated verb then is just a compound verb, which can in turn be conjugated.

The past-tense is an exception and is simply a conjugation and not a helper verb, so you don’t conjugate further from there, all the other conjugation takes place first and then the tense at the end.

する is irregular, but it’s conjugations are still verbs that can be further conjugated. させる⇒させた、させる⇒させます⇒させました、させる⇒させている⇒させています⇒させていました
