I'm using default settings on Anki (no add-ons) and the deck i'm doing has >17,000 total cards. Currently, i'm getting around 400 to 450 cards to do a day and it's taking too much of my time. What adjustments are suggested to make it so that i'm only spending ~1 hour or less each day? The cards have been set at 20 new cards per day since i started, is changing this to a lower number recommended?

I have set it at 10 new cards per day and when I notice that it takes me too long for my liking I set it to 0 for a while.
Lower your new daily cards. Its the recommended, and only real way to lower your daily anki time. I did 20 cards a day for a few weeks. It adds up. Im currently doing 6 new cards a day, because 100-120 reviews a day was already too many for me.
Also, i think 17K cards is too big a deck tbh. What deck are you using
The number of new cards impacts the number of reviews, but changing it now will not have an immediate effect on your reviews. You will have to deal with your backlog first, then it should stabilize.
If you didn’t enable FSRS algorithm, you should do it, it will optimize your reviews.
you can stop doing new cards for a while until the reviews decrease to a number you find manageable.
after that yes lower the number of new cards you do per day, 10 results in far less reviews and it’s the number I usually go for.
Is it naive to say just stop at the 1 hour mark? Also, 17,000 is a lot of words, great job!
Activate FSRS if you haven’t yet, then lower the new amount drastically.
What I do is essentially time gate. I know ~35-40 programmed reviews take me about 10-13 minutes (due to a good chunk being young cards) so if my day has 40 reviews I have 1 new word, if it has 30 I add 4, etc
It regulates that way. You rule over your time not some app. Gotta rein it in now
Lower new cards to 10. Turn on FSRS. Desired retention = 0.8. Leech threshold = 6. Leech action = suspend card. Optimise FSRS parameters monthly.
Firstly lower the new card amount.
Secondly make own deck.
Thirdly. A lot of you guys, who use pre-made decks, are trying to get a whole sentence right, while imo you just gotta focus on the word which is asked. The sentence is just a context which helps to decide how the 十分 in this question is read as.
Third and a halfly. Unless you made a sentence of all the vocab which is simple for you, then I don’t think it’s a good idea to focus so much on getting every word right.
