Anyone have experience teaching at K&F English academy?

I believe they have one location in Mihara and one in Takehara. Some great reviews on glass door from teachers but also some concerning ones so looking for more info. I’m American btw.

  1. I can’t speak to working there, but I lived in Mihara for 5 years and met the owner. They have been there a long time, so in that sense, they aren’t fly-by-nighters. Previously they had a pretty good package going but I think it has gone down in recent years. They might have also wanted (required) you to essentially rent from them, in what I assume was an apartment they owned, which means you’re effectively being paid less as you are subsidising their mortgage. **However, this is PURE speculation.**

As per many small eikaiwas you seem to be expected to be there long hours and be “part of the family”, by helping prep, do events etc. Flipside, they don’t seem like the kind of place to dick you.

So, overall, from what little I know, not super, not bad. Above average and Mihara /Setouchi area is beautiful with some really nice people I am still friends with and I go back to visit. It’s a great place to live.

Mihara has a JR/Shink combo station which is super convenient. It is also the closest city to the airport and it’s easy to get to Hiroshima, Onomichi and Fukuyama

  2. Hi, I was interviewed by them a couple times this year. They couldn’t find a teacher in about 8 months of looking and here’s why I said no to their offer not once, but twice.

The man who runs the business is a bit of an ass. He gives me that kind of vibe. He said there are cameras in the classroom so he can constantly record teachers and evaluate them. This shows he doesn’t have trust in the people he hires, and treats them like dogs on a leash or children.

I was told that for the first several months I should come in several hours early everyday to prep for classes all unpaid. I told him during the interview this was ridiculous and unpaid was absolutely unacceptable and he tried to give me some lecture about how life goes on etc.

The pay is still.bottom barrel for the industry. For a small school that claims to have good teacher retention their salary hasn’t gone up in the few decades it’s been around. If anything it might be lower than the past while the hours have increased. (60 hours a week by the way.)

All in all, I wasn’t surprised when I kept seeing their job listing for 8 months.
