idk if its legal, but often times small businesses do that fr
You have 10 days since your first year, and increase every year no matter the contract you have. I recommend you to contact the labor union to review your contract
You’re 8 years deep and asking this now?
Impressive, I suppose. Best of luck in resolving whatever issues you’re currently facing.
Dayang.
If the contract says you are an independent contractor (gyoumu itaku) then yes, legally, you may not have any paid holidays.
Otherwise, legally, you have to have at least 10 from the first year (5 of these can be dates chosen by the company. The other five are chosen by you).
Eikaiwa will take you for a ride because they know you’re vulnerable, in most cases don’t speak Japanese and don’t know any better. It’s common practise to find foreigners who check all these boxes for their own benefit. It’s practically their business model.
Having said that, if you have a good relationship with your boss try and have a serious chat with them about it. Calmly. They will probably give you what you need, but if I were you I’d take them to court and claim 8 x 10 days worth of salary and leave. You’d probably win if you start at a union.
Wait are you noticing this now?
Japan has an extremely strict law (労働基準法)for protecting workers.
You can consult to local office called “Rokisho, 労基署”
That’s what Japanese people would do.
It’s reading stuff like that which make me not feel sorry for English teachers in Japan. I know it’s hard but stand your fuxking ground and think for a minute.
Its not legal and they have lied to you. Its a shame they would try to take advantage of you like that. After 8years you didnt think its odd you had no time off? Did they just dock your pay if you took a sick day or something? I would reevaluate my position there if I were you. What else have they done to you in all this time? Do you even trust them anymore? Start looking for something else and please do get them in trouble with the labor board.
