Mine sends us off to 3-4 different training events a year. Is this normal? How many of you just got dumped in a school 5 years ago and told to get on with it.

JETs in our prefecture get 2days a year. My town’s BOE doesn’t do anything on top of that. The dispatch ALT for hs gets nothing last I checked.
I worked in 6 different cities. Only my direct-hire position with Osaka City did training weekly. Every Wednesday for 2 or 3 hours.
My previous employer had one meetup a month, for two hours. If I’m honest it was mostly for show (we did it at city hall in the BoE’s meeting room). It was a bit useful to exchange lesson plans with others, though.
Current one has summer and spring training, a big event they rent out a hotel ballroom for (not as fancy as it sounds). Other than that, I never see anyone else in the company. I like this better.
When I worked for Altia and Interac it was twice a year. The problem was that it was very poor quality and often just the same thing we had done in the previous training. Many ALTs made suggestions as to what training they would like but it was often ignored.
I was an ALT for three years, I got two days training from the dispatch company on how to be an ALT and that was it.
What do you mean by “training”? 😅
When I was a JET ALT in Fukui back in the 90s, they would have 2-day ‘get-aways’ with JTEs. It was pretty worthless for anything about LT. I think it helped some ALTs and JTEs bond better though.
(Current) BoE: No training, but I do take part in observed classroom observations and discussions. These happen about 4 times a year.
(Prior) Interac: We had 2 training days but unfortunately it amounted to ALT’s moaning about their situation and the branch staff talking about common rules and things to avoid doing outside of school. Not really getting much out of it.
