  1. Hi everyone, hope you’re doing well today!

I’m currently somewhere between N3 and N2. For those of you who are at this level or past it, what has been or was your experience at this stage in your journey, in terms of motivation in and engagement with the language?

For me, being at the so-called N3-N2 “plateau” has mostly been okay since I’m enjoying the process, but sometimes I do feel the struggle if I’m looking from a more results-oriented lens. At this level, I’ve spent a significant amount of time learning and actually do know a decent amount of stuff, but there’s just still so much more to learn. It’s just a really long journey.

    What have your experiences been?

  2. What is considered the best textbook for serious students? I know Minna No Nihongo is, and I am very interested in it, however the fact that some say it is outdated is making me think twice. That is the only reason – apart from that I would be 100% buying it

So, is MNN still a decent book for serious students? If no, where should I be looking?

  3. What level of the JLPT would you consider Yuyu‘s podcast to be at?

A few years back, there was a discussion on here, where someone claimed that if you understand Yuyu, you’re a high N2 and that comment was heavily upvoted. I’ve only been studying for five-ish months and only have to look up maybe 5 words per 30 minute long episode, so this estimate seems unrealistically high

  4. Does anyone here use Memento player to mine words for their anki deck? I set it up and pointed it to the same deck I use for Yomichan, and it lets me open cards and see them if a word is in the deck, but it never seems to give me the + to add a new word (I figured maybe the words were already in but on a word I didn’t have it still just had the “view in anki button” rather than the +). Does anyone know how to fix this?

  5. Do people here greatly exaggerate nihongo jouzu? I was expecting it to be thrown around like candy based on the comments here, but I didn’t hear it once while I was visiting. No one even appeared to be surprised that I was trying to speak to them in Japanese (granted, I was mostly saying fairly simple things).

It was nice that even in the big cities, about half the people were happy to try to work with my poor Japanese rather than switching over to English. And just about all were extremely patient with me as I stumbled over the language, even when they couldn’t understand what I was trying to say.

  6. レストラン で は たくさんの 仕事 が あります: Without the の then the たくさん would apply to レストラン? That’s why it’s required?

  7. What’s the Japanese learning site or book where they replace part of a word with the hiragana for the starting sound? For instance, a word like “I’m sure I’ve seen it in an FAQ or similar here, but now I can’t find it.

For instance, a word like “hikkomori” would be written as “ひkkomori”.
