Need experience or advise in adapting equipment with a european plug and 220v to Japanese standards

I brought (without thinking) a sewing machine with a European plug and 220v to Japan and of course it doesn't work. Who has had experience using a transformer and if so, which one? I'm also worried that nothing will happen to the electricity in the house (private). Maybe there are other ways to use such equipment? I would be grateful for advice
