I am in university learning to be a teacher, and I have 3 years left in my program. I am coming to the end of my first trip to Japan (I spent a month), and I toured the major cities from Osaka to Yakushima. From an outside perspective, I love this country. There is so much that interests me (I also love the heat), and I want to try teaching here after I graduate. However, I read so many nightmare stories about being an ALT and the low salary that I am beginning to look into ways I can elevate my prospects to perhaps avoid being an ALT. I’ve identified a few niches, however nothing that would be concrete enough to base a career off in the near future, so I wanted to ask other people their opinions. What ways have you found to bolster/improve your prospects, and what experience, certifications, or knowledge would one need?
