  1. This part is from a story, 件（くだん). The context is, a creature with the body of a cow and the face of a man finds himself born in the middle of a plain. He knows he was once fully human but he’s not sure when this ended.

    月が西の空に傾いて、夜明けが近くなると、西の方から大波のような風が吹いてきた。私は風の運んでくる砂のにおいを嗅ぎながら、これから件に生まれて初めての日が来るのだなと思った。すると、今迄うっかりして思い出さなかった恐ろしい事を、ふと考えついた。件は生まれて三日にして死し、その間に人間の言葉で、未来の凶福を予言するものだと云う話を聞いている。こんなものに生まれて、何時迄生きていても仕方がないから、三日で死ぬのは構わないけれども、予言するのは困ると思った。

    I think he’s not worried about dying in three days but he’s worried about having to come up with a prophecy. So the part, 恐ろしい事, is it right to interpret this as, it’s the prophecy part that is the terrible thing?

  2. Hi! I’m trying to learn Japanese and my friend and I are trying to translate chiikawa episodes for fun to learn and we cannot for the life of us find what ぺうふにやっ means
    it appears in episode 3 and seems to be related to a cut squid snack of some variety…

    online subtitles seem to imply that it means flabby but I can’t seem to find it anywhere else 😭
