Do I need to buy a new phone when moving to Japan (Technical Conformity Mark)?

Hi everyone,

I'm about to move to Japan and one of the first things I need to do is to buy a sim card. From my research, my phone needs to comply with the Technical Conformity Mark (for those who intend to stay for more than 90 days in Japan). I'm talking to a company that is providing me settling-in service with 2 options for sim card (Rakuten and GTN) and here are some information from them:

Having your own Japanese phone number is required otherwise you can NOT open your bank account. First of all, please check if your device has "Technical Conformity Mark (please see the below mark.)" or not. If your device does not have this mark, you cannot make the contract with any Japanese SIM card company by Japanese law.

I checked my phone (iPhone 12) and it doesn't have this information under Settings > General > Legal & Regulatory. So my question is:

  • Do I need to buy a new phone in Japan in order to be able to get a Japanese phone number?
  • If I buy an iPhone in an Apple store in Japan, does it guarantee to satisfy the Technical Conformity Mark?

Thank you very much!
