So I’ve (24F) decided that I want to live in Japan for a while. I currently live in America and have probably stayed in Japan for a total of 2 or 3 months on a tourist visa in the past. I work as a baker and already have a bachelor’s degree but my career hasn’t really gone as planned and I don’t have anything tying me down here so I’m ready for a life/career change. I wanna move forward with a plan quickly but I just feel kind of overwhelmed by the ways to go about this and want some outsider advice. I can understand pretty basic Japanese but I’m nowhere near fluent. Currently my goal is to reach a level of fluency that would allow me to navigate life comfortably. My friends in Japan say that I could try the english teacher route. I know it’s shitty and hard so I’m keeping an eye out for any other options but I’m willing to do it if that’s the only way for me. Before jumping into a new career though, I feel like it would be best to have a better grasp on the language, so I’m considering going back as a student.
Do you think it would be a waste of money to attend a language school for a while and then return as a teacher if I can’t find any other career options for me there? I know there are other paths besides English teaching, I have non-Japanese friends that work there in the fashion industry, as illustrators, bakers, etc. It’s all about having the right connections and knowing the language, so I wanna focus on that first.
If going back as a student is a good idea, can anyone recommend some language schools in Tokyo? I have researched but there are so many options. About how much would that cost if I were to study there for around 6 months? (With and without part time job)
Any other ideas or advice is welcomed.
