Best eSIM/Pocket wifi setup for a 3 month stay?

Hey everyone,

I’ll be moving to Japan for three months to attend EF Language School in Tokyo, and I’m trying to figure out the best setup for mobile data while I’m there. Since a lot of you have already made the move and know what works long-term, I was hoping to get some advice on the most reliable and cost-effective options.

Would you recommend an eSIM, pocket WiFi, or a combination of both? Ideally, I’m looking for:

    • Good coverage in Tokyo (and potentially other areas if I travel)
• Unlimited or high-data plans since I’ll be using my phone a lot for navigation, translation, and streaming
• A balance between affordability and performance
• Something easy to set up without a long-term contract

Since I’ll only be there for three months (possibly longer as well), I’m not sure if I should go with a tourist-focused option or something locals actually use. If you were in my shoes, what would you get?

Appreciate any insights—thanks in advance!
