Seeking Advice for Teaching in 2025

I’ve been teaching English at a private language academy for a little over a year in preparation for meeting my goal of teaching in Japan. This is a lifelong dream of mine and I want to make sure I’m making the best decisions possible. I’ve had my sights set on JET for a couple of years as it seems (on the surface) like a really good choice since they help you set yourself up with living situations and that you kind of have a say in where you go. But, I’m worried about pay and how much money I need to squirrel away so that I can live comfortably without too much stress.

As an experienced teacher, do I have a shot at a higher salary?? This is the main thing I’ve been hoping for, but I can’t seem to find any information about how job experience can benefit me.

Is $2500 enough to cover my rent for a month or two, or do I really need like $5000 to get by?? My top 3 locations to teach would be Fukuoka, Nara/Kobe, and Yokohama. Ideally, I’d live in the outskirts to try and have cheaper rent, but I’d like a commute that doesn’t take much longer than 30 minutes, either by train or car is fine.

Any advice you can offer is much appreciated!!
