Stupid but also predictable. The problem with Japan Inc. is that it likes a *really* slow national suicide.
But, anyway, whatever. I just find owners of land and get their permission to use some.
But farming… Really? Man of your talents?
There goes my idea of having my own rice fields and my homemade sake
Some Chinese investors may be buying Japanese farmland to produce ‘Made in Japan’ goods using cheaper Chinese materials.
How about national treasures?
A 1000 year old shrine near me was just purchased by a foreign businessman.
I hope they don’t turn it into a pachinko parking lot
We have to stop these foreigners buying up all the rice fields!
The article is behind paywall so I don’t know the details. But Foreigners buying farmland in Japan? If I understand correctly, even Japanese have difficulties buying farmland in Japan (requires lengthy approval process). Basically you more or less HAVE TO be a full time farmer to own farmland. Since when does buying farmland becoming a thing…..
As a farmer in Japan and a non Japanese national I think this is a really good idea.
There is a Bangladeshi guy in our area trying to buy up as much land as possible and parcel it out to folk that have no idea how to manage it but they do have a connection to him.
I’m a foreigner here, just went through the lengthy process of gaining my local JA approval last year and pulled the trigger. I’m a bona fide farmer here. Purchased 畑 and 田. I had to agree to tend my farm land for 150 days per year for the first 3 years to gain the JA approval and finalize the land purchase.
The “Article” linked here mentions exactly what I had to go through. So… What exactly is changing?
Good. More countries need to protect their local lands from outside speculative investment. It does nothing but hurt the locals who actually need to live here.
Maybe restrict non-residents from purchasing land/homes… Leave some for people who can actually use them more than 3 months out of the year.
