Quit within a week of arrival and was slapped with a cancellation fee. How can I avoid paying it?

I hate this company and I would prefer not to pay them. How can I avoid it if possible? EDIT: A bit of context- JET did NOT alert me of this fee. I left in August and they are giving me a $3000+ bill with only 3 WEEKS to pay it and no wiggle room/payment plan. THAT is why I'm pissed off. I'm teaching ESL in America and I do not have the money to pay this within 3 weeks. So all you JET loyalists should have a hit of context for why I'm pissed off. This program was nothing but delayed communication and a horrible fucking support system. They may brag about all their mental health standards for their ALTs in the orientation til the fucking cows come home but they don't do shit when it comes to communicatijg clearly and giving solid dates. And I'd highly advise anyone from signing up for it if you see this and you're on the fence. Get TESOL and apply to private schools. It's much easier to get accepted, pays more, and you have control. Don't fall for this.
