Hey everybody,
I’ve just got a job offer in Tokyo, it triples my current salary + living in Japan has always been a far-off dream of mine, but now it’s here and I feel like I got to take it.
A few things about me, I don’t speak a lick of Japanese, but I’m willing to learn, and I’ve never moved overseas without a group of people I know before, so this is the first time I’m doing that.
To anyone who’s been in the same boat, please impart any insight that y’all can offer would really appreciate it. Thank you!

What sort of job is this that pays more and doesn’t require any Japanese? Congratulations!
How the hell did you land that job??
Are you an introvert and extrovert? I am sure you will enjoy here as an introvert. People are really nice to you.
People in Japan respect your privacy so they will never contact you during weekends or holiday in which I like a lot.
If you are an extrovert, you might feel a bit disappointed and need to re-learn how human relationship works in Japan.
Anyhow, congrats! Hope you enjoy it here!
Hi OP, congratulations! I am also hoping to move to Japan soon but still in interview stages so really hopinggg! But I have moved countries without knowing anyone there before so my advice is:
1. Ask for your office to help you with minimum the first month of living accomodations. If you don’t know anyone there, you will need to get to know people and places first before you can decide where to settle. My understanding as well from friends in Japan now is that the renting process is quite tricky for foreigners so this helps eliminate that worry.
2. Bring atleast two months worth of favourite essentials like medicines, skincare, etc so that you have this whole you figure out what the Japanese versions of those will be — this tip only works if you have a relocation allowance though.
3. For meeting people, you can sign up for classes and such in your local area. I use the meetup app and find activities relevant to my own interests. Also, sign up for a language class! Since you’re willing to learn Japanese, it will also be a good way to meet people.
Hope you have lots of fun in this new phase of your life!!!
If you’re looking to meet people in Japan, join TIFE (Tokyo International Friends and Events). I joined their group when I felt like I had no friends in Japan, and mostly everyone is chill and down to earth. They do a variety of events too and it’s easy to be friends if you have the right attitude.
