Hi everyone,
Some background about myself:
– I am a Japanese citizen with a Japanese passport
– I got my Canadian Permanent Resident (PR) as a child back in 2002
– For various reasons, I want to get a Canadian Passport and citizenship
I’ve read that you are supposed to renounce your Japanese citizenship as they do not allow dual citizenship however many individuals simply do not renounce it and continue to have both Japanese and Canadian citizenship.
My question is how do these individuals travel to Japan? My parents live there so I often travel there at least once a year.
My process was simply:
- book a flight using my Japanese passport
- show my Japanese passport on departure from Canada and arrival in Japan
- repeat above process when returning from Japan to Canada with the addition of showing my PR card while checking in my flight in Japan and exiting the airport in Canada.
How will getting the Canadian citizenship and passport change this process?
Would it be something like:
- book a flight using my Japanese passport
- show my Japanese passport on departure from Canada and arrival in Japan.
- On the return flight back to Canada, show my Japanese passport at check in from the Japan airport, upon arrival to Canada show my Canadian passport?
Any help or clarification would be very much appreciated.
Thank you!
