I am an undergrad in the USA studying paleontology (Geology). I am trying to learn more about life in Japan, but my "research" on the topic has conflicting results, or doesn't relate to my discipline.
My displine is in Geology (Paleontology), so STEM. I have a prospective Biology program in Yokohama, Japan with a graduate advisor (paleontologist) willing to take me. I plan to attend the program when I graduate in a year. I am applying for MEXT through the Japanese university.
I would like to work in Japan one day, as a professor or in a museum, and despite having taken Japanese classes for three years, completing the two GENKI Elementary Japanese books, I'm not confident in my Japanese.
I have prior experience studying abroad in Nagoya, but it was only for eight weeks and for intensive language study. I met the advisor during this time, so there's no question about my choice in grad school.
I'm just not sure what I should expect. I would really like to study in Japan, but all the talk I've seen of "oh, you'll be so lonely", "oh, a degree from Japan means nothing", or "oh, Japanese grad programs are all horrible", is making me worried about living in Japan. The talk won't stop me, I know Japan has its quirks, but it isn't very assuring either given how big a step this would be in my life.
