Hi everyone,
I’m planning to move to Japan either at the end of this year or early next, and I’d love to hear from others who have experience living there with extensive tattoos—especially a full or partial horimono bodysuit.
I’m a woman in my late 20s with a Japanese-style full-body tattoo (traditional dragons and sakura blossoms). I understand the cultural history and stigma surrounding tattoos in Japan, but I also know things are slowly shifting—especially in urban or international areas.
I’m planning to apply to international schools all around Japan and I’d also love to access onsens, gyms, or sento.
So I’m asking:
• Has anyone here lived or worked in Japan with large, visible tattoos?
• Which cities or regions feel most accepting or relaxed?
• Any onsens or gyms you’ve used personally that were tattoo-friendly?
• Have you faced discrimination or awkwardness at work or socially because of your tattoos?
• Any tips for managing reactions or explaining it culturally?
I’m professional, always dress appropriately, and love Japanese culture deeply—I’m just trying to prepare myself realistically before the move.
Thanks in advance for your advice and stories!
