My late father, who never really gave details about his life or lineage, told me a story that his father would curse at bad students, calling them 'shinkaeh,' which he said meant stupid or mentally ill. He said it was a bad word on the island.
After piecing together bits of conversation here and there, I believe his family was from Kikai in the Amami Islands.
I also had a Japanese friend who said my father's Japanese was strange to him, which leads me to believe it's because my father may have taken on a Ryukyuan accent.
Can anyone confirm that word and the dialect origins?
