Internal job transfer to Japan from a US company

I currently work for a US tech company that has a office in Tokyo. I'm currently in IT Security and would like to know if anyone here was able to transfer over to Japan. I hold a Bachelor's in Japanese Language and culture and have lived and worked in Japan a few years ago and speak it quite well. I have visited the Tokyo office and made some connections with the staff. What are my chances?

  1. Chances depend on your company. Not on reddit. Inter company transfers happen all the time but it depends on your role, function, and capabilities. Like why would open head count in Japan need to be filled by someone not in Japan.

Talk to your HR biz rep and boss.

  2. This really is a question you need to be asking your manager. Does your team exist in Tokyo? If it does, are they hiring or expanding head count? If it doesn’t, would there be value in expanding your team to include headcount in Japan?

In my department, our security group had someone here in Tokyo at their inception. The guy was a fuck up though and quickly left the company, and the team decided they would rather concentrate headcount at head office than have someone on their own on the other side of the world.

Similarly, our CSOC team decided they’d rather expand into Singapore for Follow-the-sun purposes than expand into Tokyo because its easier to hire English speaking talent there. They’ve recently moved a couple of people from Singapore to Tokyo though. Something about wanting to have non-overlapping holidays for easier shift coverage.

Anyway, talk to your manager or see if there are similar business units hiring in Tokyo that you could apply for. Good luck!

  3. If there’s no market for your company to expand into Asia or there is a stronger competitor in Japan or Asia, then there’s no point for HQ to allocate resource to consider to transfer you there.
