Hello everyone. I was recently offered a job managing a restaurant in Kobe. The restaurant mainly caters to foreigners and the owners were searching for someone knowledgeable in Japanese cuisine and sake who is accustomed to working with foreign clientele. I have worked in restaurants in several capacities over the past 25 years and have worked in Japanese restaurants the past 6 years but my bachelor’s degree is in English (I planned on teaching English in Japan at some point…).
I’m wondering if not having a degree in the field I was hired in will hinder my chances of getting a working visa. Does anyone have any knowledge or experience in this scenario? I do speak Japanese and my interview was in Japanese although I have no formal certification (which is probably the only thing Japan cares about). I also have $100k in my savings account and tax documents that prove I’ve been working in my industry for at least a decade. The company sponsoring me has multiple restaurants and over 200 employees and I will be working with their Sharoushi. Do you think the incongruence with the degree will be an issue?
