I've interviewed with a company who won't help secure a dependent visa for my wife to move with me;
the kicker is that my recruiter seemed to think I could simply call the Japanese embassy in the U.S., present my work visa & explain my situation, and I would have a good chance of getting her dependent visa secured that way.
Does anyone have any experience with this sort of approach? Is it possible?

Did it, however the process could be different based on your nationality and the fact that you are not yet in Japan.
You have to demonstrate your relationship with your wife and that you are able to sustain her financially.
She basically has to apply for her CoE under Dependant Visa.
Look at the guidelines on the immigration bureau website.
The best thing to do is to come here on your own, (take all the documents that demonstrate your relationship with you), take a day and go to the immigration bureau yourself. Hopefully the CoE will come and you send it to her via DHL or something.
Basically, you need to have someone in Japan to submit the CoE application or at the very least sign off on papers guaranteeing that there will be support.
You can check out the process for applying without a CoE here, but this process is only for folks applying for Spouse of a Japanese national (or PR holder); not for dependents: [https://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/visa-dependent.html](https://www.us.emb-japan.go.jp/itpr_en/visa-dependent.html)
