I’ll be moving for contract work in Japan for a couple of years and I want to keep my US # and be able to get messages from my friends from my number. But I also think I should have a Japanese #. I’ve read online and seen people mention Google Voice and Google Fi but I’m unsure of what’s one benefit of one over the other? I’m still paying off my phone w T mobile but I’m understanding that I have to pay it off and get it unlocked either way.

You’ll definitely need a Japanese number if you are living in Japan. You can’t do that with the Google services here, so you’ll need a local sim.
Are you using something like Whatsapp or just SMS now? Whatsapp is more sustainable for you in the long run I think. It’s not used in Japan, though (neither is SMS, Line isking)
