Sometimes the reward is its own journey. You may have seen these statues at the west end of the Sanjo Bridge, which is also the end of the Tokaido Road to Edo. These two happy-go-lucky characters are Kita-an and his servant Yaji-san, the protagonists of a book called Tōkaidōchū Hizakurige.

It's a comic tale of their ribald adventures traveling the Tokaido. They are a couple of bumbling lechers forever in search of girls, food, liquor and scams.

  1. Yaji-san isn’t a servant if I remember correctly.
    Yaji-san, born into a rich merchant family, was a lover/client of Kita-san, a boy prostitute/actor.

They had eloped from their hometown to Edo lived together years.
