Takoyaki shops sub in sausage, hike prices amid rising costs

Rising costs in Japan have impacted takoyaki, with some shops replacing octopus with sausage due to increased costs. While some customers prefer octopus, sausage is more popular with children and those with dental issues. Despite price hikes, takoyaki remains a beloved snack, with shops exploring alternative ingredients like fish paste and konjac to preserve its affordability and cultural significance.

  1. Good. Octopuses are incredibly intelligent creatures. It’s the same as hunting dolphins or whales.

  2. I’ve done tako-pa with non-octopus ingredients long before prices rising. I hope this will spur shops to become more inventive with takoyaki filling. Could be a great opportunity.

  3. It’s always been an option not a substitute. Been always like that. Sausage, bacon, shrimp, cheese etc.

  4. I think I’d prefer that. I always find tako to be too chewy, even though I enjoy the taste.

  5. Inflation hits Japan for the first time in 30 years

    This is good for Japan

More and more Japanese need to abandon their “deflationary mindset”
