Hi! Despite learning the language for years, one of the hardest things to do when traveling in Asia is ordering food. Sure, I know the basics, but when you are hit with characters you've never seen, preparation methods you have no clue about, and Google Translate wording that is completely whack – it's hard. π
I decided to solve this problem for myself, and after a very positive reception at r/JapanTravelTips and r/ChineseLanguage, I've decided to share Menu, please! with all of you.
How does it work, and why is it better than Google Translate?
- Just one photo: No more struggling to find the perfect angle for Google Translate. Take a single picture of the menu and you're done. It also works with handwritten menus (unless they are completely cryptic)
- Detailed translations: I identify the dishes and provide you with:
- Pronunciation (both text and audio)
- Descriptions (ingredients, flavors, and cultural context)
- Easy ordering: You can listen to the pronunciation to order yourself, or select the dishes you want to create a complete order. This order can be:
- Listened to (if you want to say it yourself)
- Played aloud to the staff
- Shown as text
How do I use it?
I usually translate the menu, listen to the items I want to order, and then double-check if I have ordered correctly using the order feature. I hope this helps you bring your ordering game to the next level!
I would love for you to try Menu, please!, and share your feedback with me! This web application is completely developed by me, so I'm always open to ideas on how to make this the best ordering / food-focused language learning app out there!
The app is completely free to use, available as a Web Application (no need to install, but you can add it to your home screen for easy access), and it also works for πΉπΌπ¨π³ Chinese and π°π· Korean.
