  1. Oh well, Japan can continue to be scientifically irrelevant. God, this country can be so pathetic sometimes.

  2. So reduction of foreign grad students, and not enough locals to begin with. Add the pay is low for academia even compared to other countries (personal knowledge, from applying to positions), why would any researcher go to japan?

  3. Didn’t they just propose 700 million to recruit academics dumped by trumps university. Seems counter productive

  4. So you have a declining population and then reduce incentives to get educated foreigners into your country.

  5. LoL, this will cripple Japan (already struggling) academic research and only make them more dependant on foreigner PhDs for research activities. The impact might be not too big in industry, but in public research institutions it might be huge.

    Every year about ten or so Russians get it
