Life in Japan
Hey Reddit! Long-time reader finally making a post.
I’ve recently signed a fully remote software engineering role with a Tokyo-based company, earning around ¥8,500,000/year, and I’m preparing to move with my pregnant wife. We’re planning to settle somewhere in or around Tokyo, and I’d really appreciate advice from others living in Japan — especially families.
Key questions:
- Is ¥8.5M/year (exclude bonus) enough to support a comfortable life for a couple (soon to be three) in or near Tokyo? We’re aiming to live reasonably and save around ¥150,000/month after covering all monthly expenses (rent, utilities, food, baby-related costs). Is that realistic?
- Housing suggestions? We’re looking for a 2LDK apartment with rent under ¥150,000/month. Areas we’re currently considering:
- Suginami
- Setagaya
- Nerima
Any recommendations for other areas in Tokyo, Saitama, Kanagawa, or else that are:
- Safe and family-friendly
- Quiet, with good parks and amenities
- Within our budget
Baby-related costs: What should we expect for:
- Prenatal and postnatal care
- Daycare or early childcare expenses in the first few years
- Tips for new parents moving to Japan? Any advice on settling in, navigating local services for new families, or general things to watch out for during the move and early months?
Thanks in advance for any tips or insight! Appreciate the help.
