USA college student, soon to study abroad in Japan for a year, with some questions about my path forward

Hey all! Quick intro: I am currently majoring in English and East Asian Studies, and I will be studying abroad for 2 semesters starting in August. I’ve been to Japan once before, and I’m very excited to improve my language skills and to live in Japan for some time! My dream job is being an author, but I’m thinking of going into some kind of education post-Master’s degree as a (slightly) more reliable plan. Choosing to major in EAS was really more of a passion decision than anything (I am really interested in Japan and studying Japanese literature, culture, and religious traditions), however I do hope to integrate my Japanese language skills into my career after university. Whether this takes the form of a less glamorous, temporary JET gig or a job at a private institution, I don’t know, but I’m leaning towards most likely just living in the US anyway.

With all that being said, I want to ask: am I going to regret devoting so much time and energy to studying in Japan and studying Japanese? I’ve seen a lot about how hard living in Japan is for foreigners, and I’m prepared to be “that foreign guy” rather than being seen as actually Japanese. I also consider myself to be grounded and see Japan as any other country with flaws. however, if Japan really is a miserable place for foreigners, should I nip my interest at the bud and only study one semester instead of 2? I’m a pretty passion-driven person but sometimes that gets in the way of doing what’s best for myself. I know this was somewhat of a ramble but if anyone has advice, I would appreciate it. Thank you!
